Marble

Soft bump

Give polished stone its gentle relief, pits and fissures a few hundredths of a millimetre deep, and check it at true scale.

Matelume Guide. Upcoming features are marked separately.

Soft bump is the first marble Craft step. Polished stone is almost flat: its relief is tiny pits and fissures, at most 0.02 mm deep. That relief is never read from the image's brightness: each option places it in its own way, at specks, at fine veins or as a slow wave.

The relief

Five cards under The relief. The note under them repeats the description of the one you picked.

Option What it does
Flat No relief: a perfect polish
Pits Dark specks become tiny dents, 0.01 mm deep
Fissures The thin veins are recessed, 0.02 mm
Polish waviness A slow wave in the polish: 0.005 mm over about 50 mm
Pits + fissures Both together. Recommended for polished stone, and already selected

The depths are in real millimetres, so the relief is the same at any quality you export.

The true-scale side view

The picture shows your marble from above, then moves down to a side view at true scale, as the fabric and wall art height steps do. A line at the top gives the relief's full depth ("Relief … mm at most"), with the option you picked. At this scale polished stone looks nearly flat, and that is correct: the relief shows in reflections, not in silhouette.

If your graphics card cannot show the side view, the picture shows the height and normal maps instead, with the deepest point in millimetres.

Seeing it in 3D

The relief is too small to see as a shape. It shows as the reflections break over pits and fissures. Use the Sphere in the 3D view, turn it towards the light, or use Light to turn the lights, and watch a highlight run across the stone.

How it works with the other steps

Tip: Compare Flat with Pits + fissures on the sphere under the same light. The difference is subtle, and that is what polished marble looks like.
