Imperfections

Add subtle signs of use to the finished stone, fine scratches, polish wear, small chips, dust and water marks, each starting at zero.

Matelume Guide. Upcoming features are marked separately.

Imperfections are the last marble Craft step before Export. They add the quiet signs of use a real stone surface gets, as layers on top of the finished stone, each with its own strength. They are optional and meant to stay subtle: never damage. Everything you switch on goes into your export.

Adding an imperfection

The step starts on None: the clean slab, as polished. To add one:

  1. Switch its card on with the switch at the card's top right. It starts at 0 %.
  2. Raise its Strength, from 0 to 100 %. At 100 % you get the full effect.
  3. To remove it, switch it off. Clicking None clears them all.

You can combine as many as you like.

Imperfection What it does Changes
Fine scratches in the polish Thin scratches, mostly one way, seen in the gloss gloss
Polish wear Duller where the stone is used most gloss
Pits and small chips Small chips 0.3 to 1.5 mm: tiny dents, a little duller gloss, relief
Dust and water marks Fine dust and dried water rings, seen in the gloss gloss

Most of them live in the gloss. Pits and small chips also makes tiny dents in the relief, added to the relief you set in Soft bump.

Checking them

The picture shows the roughness map before and with your imperfections, side by side, and the height map too when chips are on. A label gives the mean roughness, so you can see how much the surface changed.

Because they live in the gloss, imperfections show in reflections. Turn the sphere in the light, or use Light to turn the lights, until a highlight runs across the stone.

In the export

Your imperfections go into the Roughness map, and the chips into the height and normal maps too, at the strengths you set. The .json lists each one you used with its strength.

Tip: Keep them subtle. Raise one at a time and judge it on the sphere before adding the next.
