Frame
Build the frame round your finished artwork live in 3D, with its shape, moulding, inner frame, mat and glass, then age the frame and the glass a little.
Matelume Guide. Upcoming features are marked separately.
The frame is made after the art, in its own phase. It appears in the 3D view only from the Frame step on, and everything in it changes live in 3D. The export matches this frame exactly.
Your image is never stretched. It is cut inside the frame's shape at its own proportions, so an oval, a circle or an arch shows only the part of the image inside its shape. There is no crop or zoom to set: the shape is always cut from the whole image.
Building the frame
Shape: Rectangle, Rounded, Oval, Circle or Arch. Rounded adds a Corners slider, 5 to 200 mm.
Frame: a style card, No frame, Flat, Rounded, Stepped or Scoop. With a frame on:
- Width: 10 to 150 mm.
- Depth: 15 to 100 mm.
- Material: Black paint, White paint, Natural oak, Walnut, Black-stained oak, Gold leaf or Silver leaf.
The woods and the leaf are real surfaces: grain and pores run along the moulding, and the leaf is laid in squares with their seams. They go into the export with the frame.
Inner frame (a liner between the artwork and the frame):
- Width: 0 to 80 mm; at 0 there is none.
- Height: 4 to 60 mm. Without glass, when the liner rises close to the frame's top or above it, the value adds "(stands out)".
- Material: Linen, White, Gold leaf, Silver leaf, Black or Oak.
Mat (passe-partout):
- Width: 0 to 150 mm; at 0 there is none.
- Thickness: 1 to 20 mm.
- Colour: White, Ivory, Grey or Black.
Glass: switch on Glass in front of the artwork, then set its Distance from the art, 1 to 40 mm. The glass stays above everything inside the frame. The frame gets a pocket for the glass's edge and deepens itself when it must, so nothing runs through anything.
Sizes
The picture side lists the sizes: Artwork, Framed, overall and Depth off the wall. If the frame had to deepen to hold the glass, a Frame depth line says so. Every part is at its real size, a rectangular frame is mitred at 45 degrees like a real one, and the glass is a real pane.
While you drag a slider, the frame rebuilds live; its ageing waits until you let go.
Frame imperfections
The frame and the glass, aged a little. What you turn on here ages only the frame and the glass; the painting keeps the imperfections you gave it in Art imperfections. Each card has its own switch, starts at 0 % when you switch it on, and has its own Strength, 0 to 100 %.
| Group | Imperfection | What it does | Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The frame | Worn edges and corners | The finish rubbed thin on sharp edges and corners, where hands touch it | colour, gloss |
| The frame | Dust on the top | A faint grey film on the surfaces that face up | colour, gloss |
| The frame | Uneven finish | The colour and gloss vary gently along the moulding | colour, gloss |
| The frame | Fine scratches | Hairline scratches along the moulding, seen in the gloss | gloss |
| The frame | Visible corner joins | The mitre joints at the corners show as hairlines | colour |
| The glass | Smudge on the glass | A faint smudge on the glass | glass |
| The glass | Dust on the glass | Faint specks of dust on the glass | glass |
The frame's cards need a frame or an inner frame, and the glass's cards need the glass on; otherwise the step tells you to add them in Frame. The ageing works on every frame shape.
These show only in 3D, so the view switches to 3D on this step if you were on the picture. They show with path tracing too. They go into your export: the frame's ageing in its own textures, the glass's in its roughness.
Tip: Turn the frame towards the light, or switch on Path tracing, to see worn edges and scratches. Scratches live in the gloss, so they show only in reflections.
