Wall art
Wall art overview
Turn an image of a painting or a print into a framed 3D asset at its real size, and set that size first.
Matelume Guide. Upcoming features are marked separately.
Wall art turns an image of a painting or a print into a finished 3D asset: the artwork's own maps at its real size, a frame built round it, and an export as a GLB and an FBX with every material and texture. The artwork is one panel: it is never tiled, repeated or stretched. Start from your own or licensed images, supplied as flat scans, catalogue images or your own designs.
The relief comes from the paint, not the drawing: brush marks and the paint body stand up, while the lines of the drawing stay flat. Wall art keeps every detail of your image, so the colour-flattening tools used for fabric are switched off here.
Choose what it is
In the Material type step, pick Wall art. Then, under What it is, pick one:
- Painting on canvas: paint relief from the brushwork; the canvas shows where the paint is thin.
- Print on canvas: flat ink with the canvas weave through it, and clear gel brushed on top if you like.
- Print on paper: flat ink with a faint paper surface, usually shown with a mat and glass.
This choice decides the steps that follow. A print on paper is flat ink, so it skips the three raised-paint steps. It also starts with a mat and glass in the Frame step; a painting or a print on canvas starts with neither.
The steps
| Phase | Step | What you do | Guide page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare | Real size | Set the artwork's real width (below) | this page |
| Craft | What gets bumped | Pick where the paint (or clear gel) stands up | Raised paint |
| Craft | Artwork | Set how thick the paint stands at its thickest | Raised paint |
| Craft | Bumped paint | Give the raised paint a type, and choose a varnish | Paint, metal and ageing |
| Craft | Metal colours | Turn gold, silver or copper colours into real metal | Paint, metal and ageing |
| Craft | Art imperfections | Age the painting itself a little | Paint, metal and ageing |
| Frame | Frame | Build the frame, inner frame, mat and glass | Frame |
| Frame | Frame imperfections | Age the frame and the glass a little | Frame |
| Export | Export | Save the GLB, the FBX and the maps | Exporting wall art |
A print on paper leaves out What gets bumped, Artwork and Bumped paint.
Real size
Real size comes right after Quality, because everything after it is made at this size: the paint is measured in millimetres.
- Width: from 10 cm to 3 m. The height follows the picture and is never stretched.
- Quick picks: 30, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150 and 200 cm.
- Depth, for a painting or a print on canvas: Stretched canvas at 18 mm or 38 mm. This is how far the canvas stands off the wall on its stretcher bars; a frame, later, adds its own depth.
A line under the controls confirms the size ("The artwork: … cm. Everything after this is made at this size."), and the chip on the 3D view reads "Artwork … cm". From the Frame step on, the chip adds the framed size.
The 3D view
The 3D view shows one object: your artwork, hung on a wall at its real size, with a pouf in front of it for scale. The pouf is only there to judge the size; it is never exported.
The view follows the steps. The frame appears only from the Frame step. The paint type and the varnish show from Bumped paint, and the metal from Metal colours. The artwork's relief is always on.
Tip: While you drag the Width slider, the artwork resizes live in 3D. Let go, and its maps are made again at the new size.
